This is one of the better cookbooks I've purchased in quite sometime. I live in Colorado and often recipes in many of the cookbooks I own do not turn out as well at altitude. Nathan Turner's, I love California is the exception. The Lemon Bundt cake was the very best Lemon Cake recipe I have ever tried. I've made several others and this one was not dry and the flavor was even better the next day. This is no small feat in Colorado. I also made the Asparagus and Leek quiche. A snap to prepare, quick to cook and very delicious. Every recipe has a photo ( which I love) and the table setting suggestions will take the fear of entertaining away in a snap. Run, don't walk to pick up this best of the best in cookbooks!
This book is awesome. I’m a native Californian, and as I paged through it I was reminded of some of my favorite spots and things about California. I was also reminded of the many times I’ve had visitors from out of state and how many of the spots and food mentioned are places these visitors have loved! This isn’t just a book for Californians to enjoy in a familiar way but also for anyone interested in the many treasures California has to offer. This book helps bring a bit of California to wherever you live. I bought a second copy for my Mom who grew up in Ohio and Georgia and loves to host and make new recipes. She’s going to love it!
I LOVE this book! I read it cover to cover in one sitting. First off, it's a gorgeous hard cover with beautiful pictures throughout of both California favorite locations, decor and the FOOD. This book includes design/decorating and entertaining/hosting tips along with the most delicious sounding and looking recipes PLUS as an added bonus a list of Nathan's "things I love" from different regions of CA. The recipes all have a short anecdote explaining his connection to the food...that I loved reading. I am a Northern CA girl, a few of the "things I love" spots I know and love too, while others I can't wait to discover! I own quite a few cookbooks/entertaining books, and none compare to the quality/care taken with this one. California LOVE!
I enjoyed reading Nathan Turner's cookbook over 4-5 days. The receipts, photos and stories lend themselves to a nice day or night in daydreaming or thinking "what do I want to make first", "who would enjoy this recipe" and so far I've made good on a few of them. I've made the Ranch chili con carne, Jalapeño cornbread, Cauliflower Soup, Marion's Sicilian meatballs and Red pepper garlic bread. All were delicious. I found twice that an ingredient called for in a recipe was an odd measurement that required, for example, 18 ounces of tomato sauce when each can is usually 8 ounces. Obviously, most people will only use two cans for a total of 16 ounces of tomato sauce, which is what I did and it came out great. My suggestion, just round up or down depending on the recipe. Everything I made was enjoyed by all and are keepers.if you live in California, or ever have in the past, I think it may be particularly appreciated. California really does have a style of its own and I enjoyed discovering some of these spots in California all over again, and some of which I have yet to experience and actually hadn't heard of...(like Castroville). Now, I know they are known for their artichokes!
I adore this book! The photographs are stunning and it would make a great coffee table book but it will get tons of use in my kitchen as all of the recipes look amazing and easy to use for the home cook....no extravagant or hard to find ingredients! Don't you hate it when you get a book full of recipes that will 1) cost you a ton of money to make and 2) take you forever to find all the ingredients? Not here! Simple, fresh, easy to find ingredients for all! Lots of great ideas for entertaining, too. I may be a little bit biased as my little town, Martinez, is featured!
Nathan Turner has written a magnificent book! I'm thoroughly enjoying each page. He writes with the brilliance of an excellent, accomplished designer, the easy adventures of a wonderful cook, and the heart of someone who, like me, LOVES living in California! I love how he treasures each town, it's residents, and it's specialness! His table settings are all enviable and he describes each one with an ease that makes me think even I could try them. And will! And lastly, this book makes me proud. I remember loving Nate Turner's work when he was a new hgtv designer and then being happily surprised to see his name on items in some stores where I sometimes shopped. And now, to be loving this book so much makes me feel so proud of his wonderful accomplishment! It's truly an awesome book!

His love for California comes through in the gorgeous pictures and descriptions of such a special state. The recipes are creative, colorful and gorgeous. This is my favorite hostess gift to give as well. Everyone needs this book in their kitchen and coffee table!
