This was an inspiring story, although the writing let you skim. The amazing feat was unbelievable and interesting to read about. Few people, if no-one would do this. I grew to admire and respect these women a lot although I wish the book about them had been a bit better.
This is incredible story of strength and courage. It will inspire readers to live life to the fullest and say, "Why not?". A truly amazing story of amazing women.
The detail janette included was 'as is'. She made me feel I was on the boat with them. A 'warts and all' read. A thrilling read.
Most of us have dreams of doing something out of the ordinary but very few of us turn those dreams into reality. This is the story of 4 middle aged Yorkshire women who go from messing about in rowing boats on the River Ouse during Saturday morning to taking part in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge a 3,000 mile journey across some of the most difficult sea conditions you will find. The book is co-authored by Janette, Francis, Helen and Niki and each have their own motivation and individual difficulties that they must overcome in order to succeed.The first half of the book deals with what was required before the race commenced. The training, endless fund raising and not least getting the buy in and support required from their respective families for they all have children. A traumatic crossing of the treacherous North Sea is vividly documented prior to the Atlantic crossing. Throughout the book the chemistry and dynamics of the group is honestly portrayed for there were at times inevitable tension and conflict.Once the race commences we are not spared what it is actually liked to live and row in such a confined space in often rough conditions. The sea sickness, the blisters and the sleep deprivation leading to hallucinations are all documented. How the team overcame these tribulations and much more is the inspirational basis of the book.Photographs are included to supplement the story and at the end the women tell how this challenge has subsequently effected their lives. Certainly an inspirational book and something that can spur you on to achieve you own individual goal however big or small it may be.A review copy was provided by the publisher.
