I am neither a beginner nor an expert beader. What I was hoping to get from this book, I did - kind of............Because this book is advertised/promoted as a "pattern" book, I thought it would be a good source of ideas to help me advance in beading. It is, as there is a good selection of subjects and styles; however, the expert beader will probably be disappointed.My disappointment comes from "how" the patterns are presented and the fact that finishing details are non-existent. The patterns (in most cases) are small, and will need to be enlarged (a LOT in some cases) in order to be workable. As for the finishing details - be prepared to search the Internet for instructions. If not for the fact that I do want to work several of the designs, I would return the book for this reason alone.The beading instructions given at the beginning are okay, but are brief and seem to be more a "refresher" for experienced beaders.UPDATEThis book has been returned. It is a very nice "picture" book; however, it isn't a good pattern book. In order to use the "patterns," a good deal of time would have to be spent in scanning/enlarging/copying. Additionally, NO manufacturer's color codes are listed - which I think is critical, if you want to have a project that "looks" like the one pictured. Even the slightest variance in color can make a HUGE difference - one that is not noticeable until a project is completed.I would like to mention one pattern, in particular - as it was something I wanted to work, until I looked at it more closely. The description stated that it was done in peyote stitch - which was true......for the bottom half of the design. On close inspection, the first half was actually worked in (what I think) was square stitch. It was this lack of attention to detail - ON A SMALL AND SIMPLE pattern - that was the deciding factor in this book's return.
Truly great book for beginning Peyote beaders, especially for the lovely Mona Lisa bracelet pattern. Although the author does not specify the exact Delica bead colors, I've made this pattern several times and I'm sure that if the colors are not exactly correct, they're darn close! I prefer to bead this as a framed finished piece (or hung like an ornament on a tiny dowel rod) since it's hard to see Mona once it's on your wrist as a bracelet. The colors I used are:# Matte black - DB310 Miyuki Delica Seed Bead 11/0 DB310 , Opaque Black Matte, 9-Grams/Pack# Opaque matte luster ivory - DB352 Miyuki Delica Seed Beads 11/0 Matte Cream DB352 7.2 Grams# Matte rainbow olive-rose - DB380 Miyuki Delica Seed Bead 11/0 DB380, Matte Green Pink, 9-Gram/Pack# Matte bronze - DB1051 Miyuki Delica Seed Beads 11/0 Matte Bronze Gold Metallic DB1051 7.2 GramsYou will also need special needles and thread for Peyote beading:# For thread, I prefer Fireline XCR-1278 Crystal Braided Beading Thread, .006"/50 yd# I don't recommend this thread in "smoke", as the color comes off on your fingers# For needles, I prefer Beadsmith English Beading Needles (25 Pack), Size 10# and Thread Heaven Single Pack is an essential product for me to strengthen thread and prevent it from tangling.# HINT: If you enlarge the pattern on a copy machine, it's really quite easy to follow and is far simpler than you might imagine.# Happy beading!
*Most* of the designs are peyote stitch, which is not clearly stated in the description. If youre a loom user, this book wont help you much. The patterns in it though are very nice and now I do have a curiosity to try new stitches out. I found the pictures of the patterns of the loom patterns to be accurate and helpful, but there are no finishing instructions or detailed instructions on each pattern. There is a good instructional on basics at the front of the book on all stitches, which is also very handy.
Made for a person who has beaded before BUT found an autism bookmark or bracelet pattern in the back that seems like a beginner (like myself) could do AND I have an autistic son. Great book!
This book sucks. There are no patterns only pictures that you have to follow. No graphs, no NOTHING!!! All it tells you about are the special stitches that you can learn and a little more --BUT NO PATTERNS TO FOLLOW just pictures.
I was very disappointed in this book. A lot of pictures, but no written pattern to follow. I am not a very experienced beader and I guess maybe I am a little spoiled, as all the other books I have have the picture of which color bead goes where AND a written out pattern.
The book has so many patterns. I haven't gotten very far.as yet. Plus this is a learning process for me. I'm just learning the Peyote stitch beading. I can't wait to finish my first project with the help of this wonderful book. With it's step by step instructions it should be a breeze. The book is great.
