About the Author
The photographer Robert Henry Mizer was born in Hailey, Idaho in 1922 and died in Los Angeles in 1992. He founded the photo agency Athletic Model Guild in Los Angeles in 1945; the magazine Physique Pictorial in 1951, and through his photos and films influenced the work of David Hockney, Gore Vidal and Robert Mapplethorpe. His photos are in the collections of New York’s Museum of Modern Art and Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art.

As a testimony to the photographic life achievements of a single artist, you can't top this book. It's HEFTY. It might be the heaviest book I've ever ordered from Amazon. It's lovingly presented. The photographs LOOK incredible and the paper stock is very good. There's probably over 100 pics that are full page size. The printing is excellent, possibly capturing the quality of the original prints. Archivally, I don't think anyone could do much better - so get it while you can. There will NEVER be a better, more thorough or comprehensive book on the photography of Mizer. This is it. It's the definitive volume.Considering the narrow focus of Mizer's work: The beefcake/athletic model - who for almost 90% of the photos are in staged settings in pouch cloths - it's amazing how vital and exciting all of it is. Not only did Mizer have a great eye for spotting "talent," he creates incredible compositions based on very few elements, while the two volumes of books remain a testimony to the energetic vivaciousness and sexual prowess of men. Which is why this collection might seem even more fresh today - as it seems to cut across many cultural histories in the US - including obviously, gay culture, body building culture, the spirit of naturism and nudism as embodied in Germany's Freikörperkultur movement, the art nude, hollywood glamour, the sexual revolution which would bring on the likes of Playboy, and a literal catalog of masculine tropes that DEFINE the american male - Athletes, muscle, sailors, bikers, cowboys, gladiators, wrestlers and on and on. Also, looking thru the hundreds of pictures, an overall theme of confidence, pleasure, fun and spiritedness gets exuding from the models - something I don't think would happen if this was a collection of female models - who are often saddled with the fantasies of men - the presentation of the female model generally revolves around two things: Pornography or Fashion.Mizer has manage to create both a testimony to the nude male body that is both erotic and filled with fantasy, while being able to deftly eschew any trace of exploitation or seediness. It becomes very evident of the love he put into his work! And the team at Taschen also put a lot of love into the collection: not only are photographic presentations and design of the book excellent, you will also get lots of compact info on many of the models and some fun histories that periodically will campily acknowledge the importance of this material in the fabric of gay history and culture. I can recommend anyone buying this book - but for gay men, old AND young, I say it's a treasure. You don't get many beautifully anointed artifacts like this that are so intrinsic to so many things: The book is a pinnacle of body building and muscle magazine publishing art, of erotic art, of gay history, of B&W photography at its finest and a celebration of MEN as is.Buy the book. Go big or go home!
This, disappointingly, is not a recreation of Mizer's 1000 Model Directory with photos larger than the tiny thumbnail size of the original. It is a thorough review of Mizer's work, and I would not have been disappointed if it had been marketed as such. The photos are those chosen by the author along with the help of Dennis Bell, who must be praised for his work in making AMG a living, breathing, organization that will carry Mizer's name to new audiences, and give more to those of us who've collected his original works. By naming it the 1000 Model Directory, it created an expectation that we would actually have a useful tool to identify the models in the original directory to the photographs that we've collected. Not that this will not be useful for that task, but if you have a copy of that original directory and hoped to be able to match the work you have to those models, it won't quite do the job. Nevertheless, it is beautiful, and shows a real dedication to Mizer's work. It is also, for those who don't know Mizer's work, or that of other physique photographers laboring against the U.S. Postal Service to distribute their work, a very good place to start in finding what is meant by Vintage Physique Photography. You'll see the gorgeous men - along with the kitch and the way that photographs had to have some kind of classical reference, no matter how slender (or absurd) in order to get past the Postal Inspectors.
This is an absolute must-have for any fan of vintage posing-pouch beefcake photography. Exceptionally high quality photos in two heavy volumes. Mine came today and I thought I would have to go get the car to carry it to the house because it was so heavy. It includes short biographies of at least most of the models, if not all (I haven't counted yet.) Also includes a DVD. Great product. I hope they put out more volumes of other photographer's work.
Very interesting to see how much things have changed for male photography. The book is very well packAged to take us back in time. The pictures are of great artistic value. The only reason I did Not give it a five star is that it is not provocative enough. But I guess It is just the way things evolve.
If you appreciate vintage physique photography, you can buy this 2-volume set with complete confidence. I have never found another book that displays this genre with the degree of excellence that this edition provides. It is well worth your investment.
