Well, the very obvious strength of the counter-revolution, alive and pretty universally thriving, throws a deep dark shadow over any such optimism. Organised religion has bit back big time and there seems be few fresh horsemen to ride up to the van.Perhaps so many of us are now left, with naught much new for our comfort, to recall the fluency and the scholarship with which DDHH addressed and attacked all those in religious uniforms whose very profession was and remains a living insult to the Enlightenment. Theologians and “christologists†still hold senior positions in national universities; clerics everywhere are guilty of such a scale of physical abuse as to warrant an appearance at The Hague; creationism remains the weed that refuses to die in public debates, church sermons and even school syllabuses; religious leaders can stand up and declare that homosexuality creates abuse and not be drowned in ridicule; miracles (and especially the miracle that is the believers-only “Paradiseâ€) which would suspend the laws of physics are still offered to the young as aeonic proof of scriptural integrity; the condition of women under Wahhabism or Shia Iran remains as troublesome and indeed as cruel as ever. One can go on down a very grim inventory of faith-rooted obscurantism on every continent.The DDHH debate here is majestic. Hitchens - surely the day he procured US citizenship was the most valuable acquisition made by Washington since the purchase of Alaska - is, specially, near his fearless best. One can but hope that his filmed performances (often relating to the launch of his “God Is Not Greatâ€) do not slide into YouTube obscurity but somehow get re-packaged for generations to come.Yes, more than a decade forward, we have Bill Maher and Leah Remini and Stephen Fry and a few others to keep the dream going. But the fear has to be that the four galácticos of godlessness are just not going to be readily replaced. This here is, in a sense, their beautifully verbalised old testament. Let’s, er, pray that it stays read and regularly refreshed for as long as it has to be. A long time, one fears.
The 4 Horsemen is a most interesting conversation and argument regarding religious doctrine and faith by four of the best minds on the subject. a thoroughly thought provocking two hour read. hard to put down.
