Review
The Harper Effect is an absolute must read, and one I cannot recommend highly enough. It's a story of childhood connections and memories, of emotional turmoil, of regret, of bad choices, of growing up and becoming your own person, to reconnecting and finding that place of healing. This book has it all." --Juliann Wallace, author of VANILLA SWIRL "The Harper Effect is part love story, part family drama, and part coming-of-age novel. But at its core, it's a story of resilience. I really appreciated how every character had his/her own challenges to overcome-- and it was fascinating to get a glimpse inside the world of professional tennis. A fast-paced and cinematic read."--Ingrid Palmer, author of ALL OUT OF PRETTY Kirkus Reviews raves that "Harper is well-characterized, and the secondary characters, including coaches and parents, ring true. Colt and his backstory are compelling, and the revelations are skillfully handled. The match action is pitch-perfect...A layered romance in a unique setting." Publisher's Weekly says "Bashford captures the conflicting emotions of a teen facing more than her share of dilemmas. Harper's struggle to sort out priorities, understand the meaning of love, and emerge a winner will be strongly felt." "An exciting peek inside the world of professional tennis, this adorable young adult romance will leave you wanting to hit fireballs at your opponent across the court and snuggling up to your doubles partner after the match!" --KRISTINE ASSELIN, author of Any Way You Slice It "Taryn Bashford has done a marvelous job blending tennis, teen angst and family strife. Harper is a flawed but totally relatable young woman who finds her better self through challenges to her rigid beliefs. I loved how committed and determined she was, yet so clueless and fragile at the same time. Not a single relationship in this book is simple, and that's a testament to Bashford's superior writing." -Alice Kaltman, author of WAVEHOUSE"This novel is the kind of book that makes me want to be a better writer. There are so many wonderful things about this book: a high stakes plot, a gripping love story, characters who breathe and live on the page, details that place us in the exciting and unfamiliar world of professional tennis... Beautifully written, this story will stick with me for a long, long time. I only wish I would have had this novel when I was a teenager." -Tara Gilboy, author of UNWRITTEN.. "This sports romance will have readers askingall the right questions about growing up. Fans of Simone Elkeles's Perfect Chemistry will enjoythe dialogue and bildungsroman style." School Library Journal"We've all faced that moment, when your life is turned upside down and the people, the carefully planned future, everything disappears. What we do in that moment is what makes us human, and that means that this book is, above all, about being human: growing up, coming to terms with who you are, and facing the struggles that make us real. I enjoyed every second of this read, and I know others will, too!" -Caryn Lix, author of SANCTUARY.Â

From the Author
I've always been fascinated by teens who go above and beyond the norm, meaning I've read their biographies, followed their progress, and studied what makes them successful. My own brother became a professional tennis player and coach, and this provided rich hands-on research for The Harper Effect. I do hope my book inspires you - everyone can have their dream if they can just find their fit (it doesn't have to be in sport) and then focus and dedicate themselves to a goal, just as Harper does in sport, and her sister does with music. Here's wishing you lots of success and a fun journey along the way to achieving your dreams.

The game of tennis is a mind game. Before you even get on the court, you need to rid of all the insecurities and hang-ups about your own game. Then, you need to anticipate your opponent’s every move and where the ball is going to bounce.Harper’s game has been suffering. She can’t get past the first rounds of the qualifying games. She’s got the skills and the drive but, as her coach observed, and before he unceremoniously dropped her, she lacks the killer instincts to finish her opponents.Luckily for her, it wasn’t too long until another coach picked her up. Unluckily for her, the coach comes with another player with a huge chip on his shoulders and the skills to boot. Her personal life is the ideal on the surface. But behind the shiny exterior, she was a mess. There is an inexplicably widening gap between her and her sister. Her feelings for Jacob (her sister’s recent ex, and her best friend), is growing the more time she spends time with him. But she knows that whatever relationship may or may not happen between them is not going anywhere if she ever hopes to patch things up with her sister. On top of that, her new training and doubles partner makes her want to either kill him or kiss him. One thing’s for sure the game of tennis is an individual sport. And if she ever hopes to climb the rankings, she needs to figure out how to play the game on her own.It is a common knowledge how I despise love triangles. It’s the waffling of the person in the middle that I abhor the most. As well, that character’s willingness to keep doing what they’re doing until they figure out with whom they want to have a relationship regardless of the hurt they’d inflict on the parties involved. Harper, unfortunately, was not a character I learned to love (or even liked) at the end of the book. Love triangle is an instant book killer. I’ve never read one that I actually enjoy.I didn’t like how she knowingly went into a clandestine relationship with Jacob even though she knows how much her sister still pined for him. The thing is, I know these are just kids. I can’t expect maturity when there’s very little to be had. I supposed it’s realistic. But that doesn’t lessen the irritation I felt while reading their angst.I did enjoy the in-depth perspective to the game of tennis. The author showed great knowledge on the tournaments, the training, the qualifying rounds and the game itself. The novel itself is set in Australia, which is great, as it’s one of my favourite places in the world.I also liked the relationship she had with her parents. They were supportive of her dreams and provided her with the means to get them. It sucks that her relationship with her sister suffered though.
I know nothing about tennis, it’s not a sport I play or even watch. That said, I was totally enthralled by The Harper Effect and the world of competitive tennis at the heart of the story. Writing about sports of any kind in a way that invites a reader in, and doesn’t make them feel they have to master the sport themselves to get it, is quite a challenge. Taryn Bashford has done a marvelous job blending tennis, teen angst and family strife. Harper is a flawed but totally relatable young woman who finds her better self through challenges to her rigid beliefs. I loved how committed and determined she was, yet so clueless and fragile at the same time. Not a single relationship in this book is simple, and that’s a testament to Bashford’s superior writing. There’s a sister bond at risk, a solid but frustrating dad thing, a complicated friendship with a brother from another mother, and a super sexy frenemy relationship that has professional and personal ramifications. I wish I knew tennis lingo so I could end this review with some pithy, tennis-y reference. Instead I’ll give it to you straight. Great book. Read it.
This novel is the kind of book that makes me want to be a better writer. There are so many wonderful things about this book: a high stakes plot, a gripping love story, characters who breathe and live on the page, details that place us in the exciting and unfamiliar world of professional tennis. But even more than these things, what makes this book so special is how inspired I felt while reading it. This book is all about believing in yourself, mental toughness, self-confidence, and chasing after your dreams, but this theme is not woven into the story in a way that’s heavy-handed or messagey. Instead we see Harper go after her dreams in the face of failure, even when she’s clobbered on all sides with family and relationship conflict. Beautifully written, this story will stick with me for a long, long time. I only wish I would have had this novel when I was a teenager. Glad I got to read it now!
Just finished the ARC of this book and discovered that it may be about a girl who plays tennis, but it's a lot more than that. Harper discovers that friendships and family are complicated, and so is romance! The book moves along quickly because of the ease of the writing and the compelling story. It brought back memories of playing tennis (badly), but the reader doesn't have to be an athlete or tennis fan to enjoy this book. Harper is a very realistic character - coping with tough competition and challenging relationships. Highly recommend for YA readers.
I love sports stories, really how much you have to dig deep inside yourself especially when life comes at you from all sides. This book is great you don't need to love it like sports to read this but the author does an incredible job teaching me all about it though. The story is really about a girl going after her passion and truly finding out how to stand on her own and accomplish her dreams.
Super fun read with a great romance.
