All people who are needing to draft, design, architect, or review a residential home NEED this book. Keep it by you as you work and save your clients time and money by doing it right the first time. It is not a book you sit down and read, so if you are worried about reading a big book, don't be. You don't have to sit down and study it. It is too big to remember everything in it. This is a bench-side reference. This book is about building codes for your area. It contains what is allowed and what is not allowed and how you must do it. Don't waist your time drawing it one way only to find out it's back to the drawing bard for you. That will cost you time, money, and a re-submitle. I was familiar with the book before I bought my copy.
I work in the safety industry and the 2009 IBC is a great resource to make sure I provide accurate and factual information for people prior to building inspections. There is obviously a TON of info in the code so it can be confusing, but the code is quite navigable. The standards are laid out in a way that is pretty easy to follow and prevents "information overload". Its also pretty easy to understand. There isn't too much technical jargon that would confuse some people who aren't involved with the topics on a daily basis. Overall a great resource for anyone in construction, safety, facility management, engineering, or architecture.
Don't bother buying this, the charts are very tiny and do not resize so you can't read them. It is hard to navigate using the very limited TOC, you only get "Parts" and no 'Sections' so there is a lot, I mean a lot of scrolling, to find the section you need. I ended up taking a screen shot of the table of contents and printing it out so I could navigate better. You can not print at all, hence the screenshot, you can not highlight and print anything. This is not worth the money. It is a rip off. I wish I could return it!
What's to say? If you need it you gotta have it. The publishing houses that have captured the regulatory reference markets republish as they please, and the regulators require that you buy updates to do business. Frankly I found The UBC-Codes of the 70s more useable, back when they were hand-sized and addressed core issues. Unfortunately the IBC/IRC has become so wordy that it includes typos and nonsense. But hey, either get involved and object effectively, or just write the check -- not much choice, they've captured the market, mandated by officials who know no better.
1st time buying a CD version of a code book.I'll never buy another printed book. Lover this thing!Search function and the ability to cut and paste are very useful.One thing that had me worried, prior to buying this, was I thought I would have touse the CD every time I needed to view the code book. You do not!PDF version of the code book installs like a normal program.After entering the serial number etc. you don't have to use the CD again.Looking into replacing all my code books with similar products.
I don't think anyone purchases this book because they want to - clearly it is an essential reference manual for anyone in the architecture and construction industries. That said, I've muddled throughout the hard-copy of the IBC before...UGH! For my own office use, I opted to purchase the kindle version for my I-pad and it's amazing how much easier it is to use! All of the chapters and internal refrences are hot-linked and the entire thing is searchable!
i needed it for the California seismic PE exam. i would DEFINITELY bring this book (or whatever version they're now recommending you have) to the exam. you'll need it! it's basically useless after the test, and i wouldn't use it unless i absolutely had to in my job.
Great to have this on CD / PDF. Makes it easy to print the pages you want without the pages you don't need.Would be 5 stars but the index only breaks things down by chapter instead of earlier code releases that have it broken down by chapter and subsections.Maybe the index will be improved with the next printing of the 2009 code.
