Bought this for some guidance for a night out with the girls. We're all native Philadelphians, but we're all in the 'burbs these days so I wanted something that would give us the down low on Philadelphia's restaurant scene. There was information about a lot of eateries I was unfamiliar with, and will definitely have to give a try, sometime. Unfortunately, it has not been updated since 2012, and I found some of the recommended restaurants now closed. An even bigger draw back was the kindle formatting, because page numbers were referenced, but not displayed. I ended up doing searches, which turned out to be frustrating. One restaurant listed as being on page such and such could not be located with the search feature. But other than that, this book is a good starting point for anyone interested in exploring Philadelphia's rich culinary scene. Augment with trips to the author's blog and facebook page. She's got some recipes I can't wait to try!

This is one fantastic guide to the yummy treasures tucked and not so tucked away in Philadelphia! Iris McCarthy's unpretentious delivery makes this an easy and fun read. The breakdown of the areas where the various restaurants are located while also listing them by the type and style, offers foodies simplicity in seeking out a new favorite (or several). This guide is no regular boring list of restaurants and what they serve; rather it provides historical background info in the city, where to find locations for culinary classes and food tours as well as where to find food festivals and events by season! My personal favorite element is a hilarious listing of How to "Speak Philly" - as a former Delawarean, I already know how to speak this one-of-a-kind language and reading this small portion brought back some great memories. There are many guides out there but this one made me want to read it all, not just skim and tuck it away someplace. McCarthy's wit and whimsy are contagious as she is able to present a wealth of information about the culinary offerings of Philadelphia, from all price ranges and all styles of restaurants (including kid friendly!), while making one giggle or at the very least crack many smiles along the way.
If you are a Philly Foodie or just want to act like one this guide is for you. Iris McCarthy does a delightful job of narrowing down Philadelphia' s Best Restaurants, Markets, Foodie Fave Spots, Landmarks and Post Midnight Munching spots- for those city-ites who still have their dancing shoes on. Make sure NOT to overlook her take on Iconic Treats and "How to speak Philly" a great guide for any out of towner or local suburbanite who claims to be "from Philly" but has never learned the art of ordering "whiz-wit".Iris' reviews were not only informative but wonderfully entertaining. We Philadelphian's are spoiled with good eateries and she does a fantastic job of breaking it down for you and where you should spend your money on food no matter your budget.An even better feature of this book is its portability its small enough to keep in your glove box or tuck in your handbag. I will keep mine in my glove box because no matter what side of Philly you end up on you will not want to be without this guide.** It will make a great gift for those new students who have just transplanted into the city as well- wrap this gem with a red bow and a visa gift card and your student will spend wisely.Thanks for a great addition to my library and a guide that will surely be used!
Food is fun, fabulous, and fascinating. This book is just the perfect source for finding exactly what one is craving at any time during the day or night. I lean more towards fresh and organic ingredients for my regular diet and then fun and fabulous for a girls night out! No matter what you are looking for you have it all at your finger tips with the Food Lovers' Guide to Philadelphia. Each review is thorough and gives exactly the right amount of information needed to plan a fabulous meal out! In addition to the food choices served at each establishment, I love that the guide gives you information on the atmosphere as well as cost and location. When planning a special event, a family night out, a date night or a girl's night out- this book truly gives you all the right information to plan the perfect outing. I have already visited one of the restaurants that I read about in the book and it was spot on! It was an extra treat to read about culinary class and food tours of Philadelphia as well!
